Senior Backend Engineer

Job description.

Principal / Staff Backend Engineer (Python + AWS)

Location: Fully Remote (UK)
Ref: OCHO-PYARCH0425
OCHO - Building Teams

We're partnering with an award-winning tech company transforming its sector with data-rich, cloud-native platforms. They're scaling with purpose - investing in developer experience, platform reliability, and scalable architecture.

We're hiring for Principal and Staff-level Engineers with deep Python and AWS expertise - engineers who think beyond code to shape systems, influence decisions, and mentor others. You'll be instrumental in evolving a platform that digitises complex workflows and surfaces operational insights in real time.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Architecting and building production-grade backend services and APIs using Python (Django or Flask).

  • Designing distributed systems on AWS, with performance, resilience, and scalability top of mind.

  • Leading by example - through clean code, mentoring, and clear technical direction.

  • Owning CI/CD workflows, IaC, observability, and release automation in a DevOps-native culture.

  • Working across teams to design cohesive, event-driven integrations that power the core platform.

  • Driving architectural decisions and helping shape the engineering roadmap.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of professional software development, with a strong focus on Python in production.

  • Deep familiarity with AWS and modern infrastructure tooling (Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes).

  • Experience delivering microservices, REST APIs, and serverless or container-based architectures.

  • Track record of owning systems end-to-end, including monitoring, alerting, and zero-downtime releases.

  • CI/CD fluency - Jenkins, GitHub Actions, CircleCI or similar.

  • Strong communication and mentorship skills - you lead, guide, and elevate those around you.

  • Bonus if you've dabbled in Go, GraphQL, or machine learning integrations.

What's on Offer

  • £80,000 - £100,000 base salary

  • Fully remote working (UK-based) with flexible hours

  • 36 days total annual leave

  • Private medical, dental, and vision insurance

  • Flat structure, no red tape, and full autonomy to ship code and influence direction

  • 10% ( company ) , 10% ( individual ) pension
