IT Analyst/Programmer

Job description.

Analyst/Programmer (IBM i / RPG)

A hands-on development and support role maintaining and enhancing bespoke business applications on IBM i, based at Head Office in Northern Ireland, paying £50,000 to £55,000.

About the Company

Our client is an established business with retail, hospitality and wholesale operations, supported by an in-house IT team. Its core systems run on the IBM i platform (formerly AS400/iSeries), with bespoke applications written in RPG. They’re adding an Analyst/Programmer to the team to support and develop the business-critical systems behind those operations.

The Role

You’ll keep the bespoke applications running and improving: maintaining and enhancing existing programs, testing data and processes, and supporting the retail, hospitality, wholesale and ERP/finance systems the business relies on. Alongside the development work you’ll look after the databases, monitor the systems and support users both remotely and on site. RPG experience helps but isn’t required. Strong programming ability and a willingness to learn matter more, and full training in RPG and IBM i is provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance existing bespoke business applications on the IBM i platform.
  • Support the retail, hospitality, wholesale and ERP/finance systems that underpin the business.
  • Test data, programs and processes to make sure changes work as intended.
  • Perform database maintenance and system monitoring.
  • Provide technical support to users, both remotely and on site.
  • Contribute to digital forensics activities when required.
  • Work with internal teams across the business, external software suppliers such as EPOS and ERP vendors, and network support suppliers.
  • Coordinate annual leave cover with other members of the IT department.

What You’ll Need

  • Strong programming ability in any language is essential, and the single most important thing our client is looking for.
  • Experience testing data, programs and processes is essential.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills are essential.
  • The ability to adapt to and use new technologies is essential.
  • Third-level education and a current driving licence are essential.
  • RPG programming experience is highly advantageous.
  • Software troubleshooting experience is a strong advantage.
  • Familiarity with warehousing, retail or EPOS software is desirable.
  • Experience with ERP and finance systems is desirable.
  • A solid understanding of network architectures and protocols is desirable.
  • Windows Server experience is desirable.

Why Apply?

  • A salary of £50,000 to £55,000.
  • Full training in RPG and IBM i systems, so strong programmers from other languages can step straight in.
  • Exposure to a wide range of business technologies across retail, hospitality and wholesale.
  • A stable, business-focused IT environment built on a highly reliable platform.
  • A supportive and collaborative team.
  • Room to develop and grow your IT career.
  • Core hours of 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility.

Note For Applicants
