Staff Software Engineer (Backend)
OCHO are searching for a Staff Software Engineer to join a fast-scaling engineering team working on the next evolution of a cloud-native platform. This is a senior technical role where you’ll combine hands-on development with leadership, helping to shape architecture, guide teams, and deliver features that operate at real-world scale. This role will offer the successful candidate " remote first " and hybrid options. Rare in this market.
The Opportunity

Build and evolve distributed backend services in a modern cloud ecosystem.

Work with high-scale data, event-driven systems and complex integrations.

Lead by example — writing production code, setting technical standards, and mentoring engineers.

Collaborate with Product and Design to take ideas from concept through to delivery.

Influence the technical direction of the platform while improving how the team delivers.
Tech Environment

Languages/Frameworks: Python (open to Go, Java, Scala, C#, TypeScript etc.)

Cloud & Infra: AWS, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, containerisation

Data & Messaging: Kafka, Kinesis, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, GraphQL/REST

Patterns: Event-driven architecture, high-scale data processing, service-oriented systems
What You’ll Bring

8+ years’ experience building production-grade software at scale.

Strong background in backend development with modern OO languages.

Experience designing for scale, resilience and performance.

Practical knowledge of event-driven and distributed architectures.

Familiarity with observability, monitoring and CI/CD.

Ability to mentor, coach and raise engineering standards.
Nice to Have
-
Knowledge of GraphQL, streaming technologies (Kafka, Kinesis) or service-oriented architectures.

Experience with Kubernetes or similar containerisation platforms.
