Software Engineer

Job description.

Senior Software Engineer (Venue Connectivity, Contract)

A hands-on contract role building and running exchange and broker connectivity for a live trading platform, based in Belfast three days a week, paying up to £500 per day inside IR35.

About the Company

Our client is a global technology consultancy delivering engineering teams to a leading provider of energy trading software. Their platform connects traders and customers to major exchanges and brokers, and the team responsible for venue connectivity is expanding in Belfast with two senior engineering hires.

The Role

You will build and operate the software that connects trading venues and customers to the platform, working across order and trade flows, high-throughput market data and the reliability of the services behind them. The role suits an engineer who enjoys understanding complex protocols and turning them into dependable production services, and who wants to own work from design through deployment and support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve connectors and services for exchange and broker integrations.
  • Implement and maintain order, trade and market data flows, including protocol translation and venue-specific behaviour.
  • Diagnose production issues, fix defects and improve resilience, startup behaviour and recovery.
  • Make services easier to operate through useful metrics, logs, dashboards and alerts.
  • Improve automated testing and deployment pipelines, including safe promotion between environments.
  • Contribute to technical design reviews, documentation and knowledge sharing.
  • Work with product, test, operations and other engineering teams to deliver changes safely.

What You'll Need

  • Strong programming skills in C# and .NET are essential, and the single most important thing we are looking for. Strong Rust experience is equally welcome, with a willingness to pick up the other.
  • Experience delivering and supporting production software is essential.
  • The ability to reason about asynchronous, distributed or event-driven systems is essential.
  • Experience integrating with APIs or external protocols, with care for compatibility and failure modes, is essential.
  • A testing mindset, turning requirements and incidents into useful automated checks, is essential.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative approach to design, code review and incident investigation are essential.
  • Experience on trading, exchange, brokerage or other low-latency or business-critical systems is highly advantageous.
  • Knowledge of order management, market data or financial messaging protocols such as FIX, ETI, EMDI or iMpact is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and Helm, AWS (S3 and DynamoDB) and Linux is desirable.
  • Familiarity with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana or Splunk, or serialisation formats such as Protobuf or FlatBuffers, is desirable.

Why Apply?

  • Work on a live trading platform connected to leading exchanges and brokers.
  • Up to £500 per day inside IR35
  • Based in Belfast three days a week.
  • Complex, protocol-heavy engineering where reliability really matters.
  • Ownership from design through to production support.
  • A straightforward two-stage interview process.
